2Code with Little Brains

At Little Brains we strive to remain at the forefront of technology teaching and learning. The huge global trend towards teaching programming to young children is echoed in our use of software to teach coding.

Little Brains Coding

From preschool all the way through to grade 7, we teach coding implicitly and explicitly: implicitly through the use of creative software designed to help children understand how to make their own resources, and explicitly by using 2Code, which is a specific coding program for young learners.

Benefits of Teaching Coding to Kids

  • Children understand not only how to use a computer, but how to manipulate and create programs
  • Children are taught computational thinking, which sets them up for further coding, as well as understanding the way in which computers work
  • Programming is a great way to teach logical reasoning skills
  • Children learn important problem solving skills in building and correcting computer programs
  • Coding is a creative outlet for children, which is so important in a technology driven environment: the pupils learn to create content, not just to consume it

Teacher Guidance

2Code is challenging and interactive in order to engage learners and has many helpful hints to keep difficult concepts from becoming discouraging. The teacher will work through a challenge with the class, explaining how to make a program step by step, and encouraging learner interaction. The pupils then have the opportunity to create their own programs, and at this stage the teacher offers one-on-one engagement to help guide the pupils through the activities.

Extension Activities

There are always extension activities for those who are really taking off in 2Code, meaning every pupil can work according to their own pace and ability level.
Some of these include:
  • free-code areas
  • challenge cards
  • debugging challenges

Some example activities:

The interface makes it really easy to create the programs, with colour coded objects and commands and a coding pane to drag them into.

In each challenge pupils build their own exciting and engaging program. For example, a program with fairtytale characters.
